Outreach Program Kalubihun 2009
These images record the outreach program providing dental and medical services to underprivileged people in the Philippines. The group comprises Love Mae's highschool batch of 1998 who have subsequently gone on to become professionals in these and other fields. They all worked very hard in difficult conditions far from those we typically expect when we visit the doctors or the dentist in the west. The main services provided were nutrition, hygene, general dental work (mainly extractions) and circumcisions. Love Mae assisted with dental patients and not only assisted with the doctors with the circumcisions but even used the scissors herself! Ouch!
The people in this remore region were amazing. I hope the images of the local people and the group give a general feel of what took place during the day. The village was the last place where electricity is supplied. Further along the road the people do not even have that. Even with electricity, my simple request for an ice cream was not met as there was no refrigerator in the village. The nearest ice cream was several kilometers away. But I felt I could go without one having seen their way of life! The children here were the same as all those I have met in other places. Beautiful and full of smiles! I entertained them with some magic tricks and had them laughing so much. You need to be a strong person to come here and not cry at times - either for pleasure or dispair. All I could see was the banana plantation they all lived in. You could not see more than two homes from any one home as the plantation was so dense. And on a steep incline also! People here are as fit as mountain goats and just as agile too! It was as much as i could do to walk around in the 30 degrees here.
I was very proud to wear the group shirt and appear as one of this batch of young superstars. They are doing great things together for so many people and they should also all be very proud of themselves. But, having said this, they would simply say they are just doing what a Filipino does - helping and sharing. The west could learn so much from the east if it would only take the time. I sincerely hope that I am able to revisit the village in a few years and see these wonderful people again.
Einswell `98 - You ROCK!
God bless you all :-)
