Hotcarz Overdrive
Event organiser Elmer Francisco kindly invited me along once more to be the event photographer for the Hotcarz Overdrive event held at Igpit, Opol CDO on 4th May 2013.
This was both a bracket drag racing event and an audio competition. However, it was not possible to shoot both so I decided to stick with the more visually interesting element of drag racing :-)
This was a great introduction of the sport here in southern Philippines with the use of an appropriate dedicated timing system and "Christmas Tree" starting lights. As I have had the benefit of attending many western drag race meetings I can see room for lots of improvements so hopefully these will gradually be introduced.
It was typically a very hot day and few people stood in the direct sunlight for more than a few minutes at a time. This made my job very difficult as my shooting locations were not so much inspired by the action of the cars but more by the location of the shade under the few trees located along the strip! However, I made the best of my positions and used the long lens from road level to try and grasp the sensation of speed and competition. Getting the faces of the drivers was mostly impossible but a few are very clearly seen.
Despite all vehicles being road going cars (rather than dedicated track race machines) the performance of some of the Japanese "pocket rockets" was impressive! I cannot inform you of any results as the main facility missing from the event was a public address system informing everyone about who was racing which vehicle and what their elapsed times and speeds were. But I am sure this will all come in time. People seemed to enjoy the event a great deal and good fun was had by all :-)
Enjoy these images and do let me know if you are one of those featured and if you would like any copies of your day at the drag strip!
ENJOY!
Peter.
