Duck Mill Boxing Day Roll 2011
This was a different Boxing Day Roll for me and a first in terms of an internationaly synchronised event also. I could not attend the roll in the UK so I did it here in Iligan City at the exact same time as my British fellow paddlers :-) This year was the 46th time that paddlers had braved the cold waters of Duck Mill Weir, a well known local tradition. I have done this countless times before but this time, I did not need to be so brave....
My venue was Cheradel Suites where the very kind members of the family owned business allowed me use of the pool at 7.30pm in the evening. I could have rolled in the sea or in the river but as it was dark, I chose an illuminated area for photos and video. I am very grateful to Cheradel Suites for allowing this historic event to take place. This is a very nice place to stay whilst visiting this part of the world and it is no coincidence that it was where I used to stay when visiting here. It is also where Love Mae and I enjoyed our splendid wedding reception - in the Celebrity Dome, Cheradel Suites entertainment venue. Reservation contact information follows:-

Love Mae captured the event with the owners and residents looking on. It was a small crowd but very enthusiastic with one of them even trying his had at kayaking afterwards! This young lad is the first Filipino to sit in a competition slalom kayak in the Philippines marking a memorable date for Viking Kayak Club, Far East Division - The Vikings have landed!
Love Mae organised the countdown based on her satelite controlled watch (previouly checked for accuracy against my own) so we know that as I went underwater, so did everyone at Duck Mill in Bedford! It was a strange feeling to be a part of the event in 25 degrees in luke warm water but, hopefully, this will now give other paddlers around the world the incentive to do the same on the 26th December 2012 at 11.30am UK time wherever they are in the world! It should be very easy to obtain a world record for simultaneous and international rolling so please go to the Facebook page to pledge your roll at "The Boxing Day Roll - Global Community". Ideally you will have a supporter or two to give you an accurate countdown whilst recording a video of your roll to confirm your involvement :-)
So, to the video. I have made several of these over the years dating back to 1982. But I have never selected a sound track title of "Twisting by the Pool" before! Many thanks to Andy Kettlewell, my very good young friend in the UK, for recording the event on the water and, quite likely, to his Dad for providing the video from the bank. I have combined the data together to formally record the very first synchronised International Boxing Day Roll.
ENJOY!
Peter & Love Mae :-)
