1975
1975 YEARBOOK
At K1M position 64 - Roger Manwaring. Roger and I were arch rivals all the way from Novice up to Div 1 where he beat me to promotion - just! He went on to race at the 1980 and 1982 Euro's finishing 11th and 20th respectively. If anyone knows where this ex RAFCA paddler is today, I would dearly love to catch up with him....as I seem to spend most of my racing career doing!
At K1M position 71, joint with a lad I raced team with several times and no longer with us, Richard Rust, is yours truly! At this time there was a "Master Class" of 12 racers, as seen in the 2nd image, but this was within Division 1 and not a separate division. The Master Class did eventually expand to 20 (wearing bibs for the first time and being bright yellow with a big black "M" on front and back) and this lead to the creation of the Premier Division later on.
Other paddlers to note here are Robert Yorke (97) who I used to train with on the London weirs. Bob got into difficulty on the treacherous side weir at Boulters Lock and very sadly lost his life. I only paddled there a few times but never went near the huge towback of the side weir. The excitement of the main sluice gates was plenty for me with the ability to loop the boat on the 2nd and 3rd waves when it was big!
The un-numbered Martyn Setchell, just a youth ("Y" meaning under 16) deserves a mention as he is still racing today! Good on yer!
Chester got the edge over Manchester with Peggy Mitchell taking the K1W title over last years champion Pauline Goodwin.
Dave Curle appears 12th in Div 2 before going on to represent GB at the 1976 Euro's in C2 with Dave Brown from Bedford (not the other one from Chester!). Dave appears as 88th in K1M and he was the slightly older paddler who drove me to many, many events before i got my own transport (thanks Dave!). We have so many great memories of our paddling days and I am very happy to report that we are still in touch to this day :-)
ENJOY!
